Buddha defeats Mara
When Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha’s original name) was in a deep meditation, and he was about to get enlightened and become the Buddha. The Buddha means the one who is enlightened and blessed with the knowledge of the truth. Buddha’s main question was why should people suffer, why should they become sick, why should they die finally, suffering was his only question.
When he was about to become the Buddha by getting the truth, a demon called Mara came to distract him and prevent him from getting enlightened.
Mara was a cruel person, he speaks ill and acts ill with others. His job is to distract people from the path of wisdom and pushing them into the bonds of wealth, gold, lust and greed and all other evil qualities.
Mara came to the bank of the river where Siddhartha was meditating, and began to distract him. He first sent forth his three lustful daughters to seduce Siddhartha. But even they tried to attract him, Siddhartha yet meditated.
Then he came forth with his huge army, and he questioned, “Young monk, I’m the only one qualified to sit on the seat of the enlightened!” and he asked his army, “who will be my witness!”
His army shouted in reply, “We will be, you alone are qualified to sit on the seat of the enlightened!”
Mara asked Siddhartha, “Who is your witness that you’re qualified to sit here?”
Siddhartha without speaking a word, laid his fingertips gently over the soil, instantly, mother earth declared, “I bear you witness!” and Mara is defeated and he was thrown to hell, his former home.
Siddhartha could see the morning star in the sky as he defeated Mara and by the sunrise, he attained enlightenment.
